During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), the shortage of coins and the withdrawal of silver from circulation caused a monetary crisis that affected everyday transactions on both sides. To alleviate this situation, so-called necessity issues emerged, which included coins, banknotes, vouchers, and tokens issued by local authorities, cooperatives, unions, private companies, and even regional organizations.

The Government of the Republic, aware of the monetary chaos, banned the circulation of coins and banknotes not issued by the Treasury or the Bank of Spain by Decree-Law of January 6, 1938, ordering their withdrawal within one month. However, the lack of alternatives meant that many of these issues remained in circulation until the end of the war.

Due to their simple minting, these coins are relatively easy to counterfeit , so we recommend purchasing these certified coins. We guarantee the authenticity of all lots. Many coins are encapsulated by expert companies. If they are not, we indicate the coin's origin.

We present a nearly complete collection of all the coins minted during this period, as can be found in the Guerra Brothers' catalog. We indicate the reference number with the initials HG.

We recommend Javier Ovelleiro's fantastic book, which compiles all of these issues and their forgeries.
