Historical-numismatic commentary
Fausta was the second wife of Emperor Constantine I the Great and daughter of Maximian, playing a central role in the Constantinian dynasty. This coin was issued towards the end of her life, shortly before her tragic fall from grace and execution in 326 AD, accused of conspiring against Constantine.
The reverse, with the legend SPES REI PVBLICAE ("The hope of the State"), depicts Fausta as the mother of the new imperial generation. The two children she holds most likely allude to her sons with Constantine: Crispus, Constantine II, Constantius II, or Constans, who would ensure the continuity of the dynasty.
