The patagón was a large silver coin, minted mainly in the Spanish Netherlands from 1612 during the reign of Archdukes Albert and Isabella, and later by their successors until the mid-18th century. Its creation responded to the need to replace and devalue the Burgundian Shield, being established with a value of 48 sueldos (patards), a fineness of 875 thousandths, and an approximate weight of 28.10 grams.
The patagón circulated widely in Europe, competing with other large silver coins such as the German thalers and the Dutch ducatons, and was distinguished by bearing on its reverse the coat of arms of the sovereigns and the collar of the Golden Fleece.
Its name derives from the term "pataca," referring to a one-ounce silver coin, and in the Hispanic world it was known as "patacón," an augmentative term of pataca.
