MAXIMIANUS HERCULICUS. Follis. (286-305 AD) Heraclea. (RIC 19a). MBC

MAXIMIANUS HERCULUS. Follis. (Ae. 10.31g/28mm). 286-305 AD Heraclea. (RIC 19a).

He was appointed Caesar (sub-emperor) in the year 285 by Diocletian, in charge of the western part of the Empire.
On April 1, 286, he was elevated to the rank of Augustus, ruling as Emperor of the West, while Diocletian was Augustus in the East. This diarchy lasted until May 1, 305, when he abdicated by order of Diocletian during the establishment of the tetrarchy system.
It is worth noting that Maximian attempted to regain power on several subsequent occasions:
In 306-308, he participated in rebellion movements, associating himself with his son Maxentius, although briefly and without establishing a stable power base.
Finally, he died in the year 310.
In short: he ruled as Augustus of the West from 286 to 305, with a brief return as a usurper between 306 and 308.
