Historical-numismatic commentary
This Egyptian tetradrachm was minted in Alexandria during the twentieth year of Emperor Hadrian's reign. Unlike Roman imperial issues, the tetradrachms of Egypt were provincial coins and were made of billon, an alloy with a low silver content.
The image of the Nile god is characteristic of Alexandrian iconography and symbolizes fertility, abundance, and the vital role of the river in the Egyptian economy. The horn of plenty reinforces the association with the agricultural wealth of the Nile Valley.
