Kings of Cappadocia. Ariobarzanes I Philoromeus (approx. 95-63 BC). Silver drachma (3.89 g).
Ariobarzanes I Philoromanus was fundamental in the history of Cappadocia, founding a new dynasty and ensuring the survival of the kingdom thanks to his close alliance with Rome, which supported him against the threats of Mithridates VI of Pontus and Tigranes II of Armenia.
His reign, although marked by constant conflicts and restorations, consolidated Roman influence in the region and allowed Cappadocia to maintain its autonomy until its definitive integration into the Roman sphere, laying the foundations for the stability of the dynasty that succeeded him.
Obverse: Diademed head of Ariobarzanes I looking to the right.
Reverse: Greek legend: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ-ΑΡΙΟΒΑΡZΑΝΟΥ-ΦΙΛΟΡΩΜΑΙΟΥ (“of King Ariobarzanes, friend of the Romans”). Athena standing, facing front, with her helmeted head looking to the left; she holds Niké in her right hand, who crowns the royal name, her left hand resting on a shield resting on the ground, spear resting on her left arm.
