Historical-numismatic commentary
This coin from the city of Smyrna (present-day İzmir, Turkey) belongs to the Hellenistic period, when the Greek polis of Asia Minor retained extensive powers to mint their own currency. The image of the laurel-crowned Apollo is common in Greek civic iconography, and the tripod emphasizes his role as the god of prophecy.
The inscription “ΣΜΥΡΝΑΙΩΝ” clearly identifies the origin of the city.
