Pontus. Amisos. Reign of Mithridates VI Eupator (circa 105-90 or 90-85 BC). Bronze.
Weight: 8.38 grams - Diameter: 18 mm
These coins were minted in the city of Amisos, in the kingdom of Pontus, during the reign of Mithridates VI Eupator, one of the most prominent monarchs of Pontus, known for his resistance against Rome.
The most common type for this period and mint usually shows on the obverse the head of Dionysus (or of Mithridates VI represented as Dionysus) with a crown of ivy, and on the reverse the legend ΑΜΙΣΟΥ, along with a panther skin and a thyrsus on a mystical cista.
Coins from this period may vary slightly in weight and diameter, but the range of 8-9 grams and 18-22 mm is typical for the bronzes of Amisos under Mithridates V.
