TIBERIUS (14-37 AD). "Tribute Denarius". Lugdunum.
18 mm, 3.45 g
The "tribute denarius" is a Roman denarius minted during the reign of Emperor Tiberius (14-37 AD), known for being the coin that, according to the Gospels, was shown to Jesus when he was asked whether it was lawful to pay tribute to Caesar.
This denarius has on the obverse the laureled bust of Tiberius looking to the right and the inscription "TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGUSTVS". The reverse usually shows Livia, mother of Tiberius, seated with the legend "PONTIF MAXIM".
